Learning Mandarin doesn’t have to be boring @ The Parenthood

I’ve always thought learning a new language to be quite a difficult task, especially when it comes to languages with a whole lot of characters such as Mandarin. Even more so for children who tend to have a shorter attention span although their knowledge retention is higher than adults. Since kids tend to be a little distracted, the best way for them to learn something is by incorporating fun factors in the teaching curriculum, which is the same thought process those at The Parenthood when they started their Mandarin Language Enrichment classes.

Integrating Mandarin with Fun

The entire Quah clan had the chance to sit in on one of the Children Mandarin Enrichment classes offered by The Parenthood. The class was conducted by Teacher Julie Xu who has more than 10 years of experience of teaching Mandarin in UK, China, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The trial class that we attended was for the Junior Group, which is catered from age 4-6 years old. There is also classes from the Nursery Group, which is from age 2-3 years old, while the Toddler Group is catered for age 3-4 years old. Although the classes are split according to age group, the materials used for the classes are the same.

Classes are conducted in a fun way, incorporating drama, games, storytelling, arts & craft, music & rhythm, and writing. This way, the kids will be motivated to be competent in the 4 main components of learning a language – speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

The Curriculum

The children had a lot of fun since it was quite interactive. The curriculum is aligned with 3 different curriculum including Malaysia Chinese MOE syllabus, IB PYP, and China HanBan YCT test. The materials used in the class are themed-based, which is related to a child’s daily life although with different levels of teaching methods from beginner to advanced.

This is a good way to get them to remember words easily since it is about their daily lives after all. With Teacher Julie’s easy to understand way of speaking and explaining to the children, they pick it up well and in turn interact during class instead of just listening and memorizing like how it usually is when learning Mandarin in school or in tuition.
